Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) Course

Who is the qualification for?

Everyone involved in road transport who operates vehicles for hire and reward must demonstrate evidence of professional competence. Applicants for a Goods Vehicle Operator’s Licence must show that they are “professionally competent” or that they employ a transport manager who meets the requirements. Persons will be considered “professionally competent” by passing the examination for the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) conducted by OCR Examinations on behalf of the Department for Transport (Holding a CPC is one of the elements an applicant must satisfy for the Transport Commissioner to grant an “O” Licence.

CPC Road Haulage Syllabus

The CPC Road Haulage syllabus covers both business topics and matters specific to road haulage. The major business topics covered in Unit R1 and reflect the first 8 modules, they include:
European Regulatory bodies, UK business law and structures, Industrial Relations, Health & Safety, financial management, business taxation, commercial conduct, organisation and Marketing the business.

The Road Haulage elements dealt with in Unit R1 and reflect the remaining 21 modules, include:
Operator Licencing, Vehicle costing & Selection criteria, Maintenance, Taxation, Drivers’ Hours Regulations, Driver Licencing and Operations, Weights& Dimensions, Safe loading, Traffic regulations, Accident procedures, International matters include Customs Transit Systems, Permits, Icoterms and International Documentation.

CPC Road Haulage Examinations

These examinations are conducted four times a year, Chemfreight DGT is an approved OCR examination centre. At Chemfreight DGT we ensure delivery of the most up-to-date and relevant training material, specifically written to prepare students to sit the OCR examinations which are outlined below:

  • Unit R1 Road Haulage Multiple Choice containing 60 questions.
  • Unit R2 Road Haulage Case Study. This examination lasts two and a quarter hours and candidates will be permitted to take paper-based reference material into the case study examination. On every R2 examination there will always be questions relating to Operator Licencing, Drivers’ Hours and Vehicle Costing.

The course is intensive and candidates will receive the course material in advance of the course and are expected to undertake an initial period of home study prior to the start of the course in addition to revision work each evening and at the weekend, we will also supply additional revision questions preparing candidates prior to the exams. To best support these needs it is important to understand that the CPC is a level 3 award (i.e. equivalent to A-Level standard and to achieve success candidates should have a good level of numeracy and literacy skills prior to attending.

CPC Course Duration

The course duration is 7 days which attempts to explain the topics specified in the syllabus to a realistic level.

CPC Course Delivery

The syllabus which the training material covers is an extremely wide one with over 300 pages and the use of over 900 Powerpoint images that have been specially created to enliven the information provided.
