IMDG Courses

Background

The 2004 International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code contains a requirement for the training of all shore side Staff connected with the shipping of dangerous goods consignments.

This requirement has not yet been incorporated in UK legislation, but such training is nonetheless operationally desirable, if only to prevent delays to consignments passing through UK ports when Shipping Companies insist on corrective action being taken by the shipper in cases of non compliance.

Course Content

The two day Course gives the Students a thorough understanding of the practical requirements of the Code in relation to classification, packaging, marking, labelling, documentation, container and vehicle packing, and vessel stowage. This is designed for those who may be directly responsible for the practical details.

The outline Program for the two day Course is—

Day 1

Background—The UN System
General layout of the Code
Part 1—General
Part 2—Classification
Part 4—Packing and tank provisions
The Merchant Shipping Regulations

Day 2

Part 5—Consignment procedures
Part 6—Packagings, IBCs, Portable tanks
Part 7—Transport operations
Part 3— Dangerous Goods List, Special provi-sions, Limited quantities
The Code Supplement

The study is based mostly on the text of the Code itself. Each Student must therefore have a copy of the current Regulations to work from—either bringing their own copy to the Course, or by
purchasing a copy from Chemfreight at cost.

In addition, on both Courses, Students receive a booklet covering the key points of the Code.
