DGSA Training Course

Course aim

In response to an EU Directive, all undertakings generally involved in the transport by road and rail, of dangerous goods will have to appoint a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA).

The general duty of the DGSA is to advise the head of the undertaking on how to achieve the safe transport and handling of these goods, in compliance with national and international Regulations. The DGSA has to be qualified by passing examinations conducted by the Scottish Qualifications.

Authority (SQA), as agents for the Department of Transport, Environment, and the Regions (DfT). This Course is designed to prepare Candidates for the Road (All Classes) Examinations

Course content

The Course is intensive. It involves 5 days classroom study, plus work sessions at home before and after.

The syllabus covers the key components of the UK Regulations and Approved Requirements for the transport of dangerous goods by road, and the ADR Agreement and Rules for European traffic. Also the DGSA Regulations themselves, and the Driver Training Regulations.. During the week, overnight exercises reinforce and confirm the learning.

Candidates will be sent preparatory work to carry out before the Course starts, including exercises for self-correction, At the Course, the study is based on the text of the various Regulations themselves. Candidates must therefore have a full set of the current Regulations to work from, which will be supplied by Chemfreight DGT at cost before the Course.

Finally, Candidates will be given further study work to complete after the Course.

To gain the DGSA Certificate, Candidates have to take a Core Section, followed by a Road or Rail Section, or both. Then they finish with one of six Classes Sections, depending on the range of
dangerous goods they will be working with.

The Chemfreight DGT Course only covers the “All Classes” module.

Details of the Examinations, ie duration, location, booking, and results administration are obtained from SQA, and can be supplied to Candidates as required.
